We have no idea where we’re going.

In fact, we’re not buying a road atlas until the day we leave. That’s because this is a quest to discover the meaning of ‘freedom’. (We think it means “being excited about getting lost”.)

Not that James actually gets lost. The man apparently has a compass and map built into his brain. Mia has no direction sense at all, but she does have a gift for connecting with strangers. What we share in common is a love of new experiences, places, and people.

James is a professional photographer. Mia is an award-winning novelist. Between the two of us, we’ve traveled through 29 countries and visited 40 of 50 US States. This time, we’re going to do it together and document the whole adventure, capturing the moments and telling the stories through words and pictures, in a book called ‘The Place We Are’.

We’re happy to have you along for the ride!

This is a real sign post that we found on our way to a writers conference in York, Pennsylvania. The GPS had determined the fastest, most direct route to the event.

However, it was a beautiful Fall day and we kept pressing the alternative routes that would take more time and take us off the beaten path and allow us to discover what freedom really means…

“Life is either a daring adventure or nothing.” – Helen Keller

We’ve made each other a promise to stay be present in our own adventure, and to look for the extraordinary in each day.

As the deeper meaning of the signs confirmed, there’s no need for an outlet when freedom is your way of life. We’re not traveling to escape anything but to make sure Life doesn’t escape us. Home will always be The Place We Are.
